Recent survey highlights a major increase in workplace mental health issues

Approximately 50% of UK managers have indicated a major increase in workplace mental health issues. From the survey it is clear that wellbeing has become a much bigger talking point, with nearly half of employers stating that they’ve witnessed their employees discussing their mental health in the last year.

However, a significant issue arising from the survey was that only 12% of employees have confided in their managers, and nearly 20% who raised issues confirmed that nothing was done. This is reflected in the finding that over 25% of managers responding to survey confirmed that they have noticed an increase in absence due to mental health issues.

The survey revealed that whilst 94% of employers said they were available to help staff who were struggling with mental health concerns, published data indicates that the support being offered by employers often doesn’t match up with what employees want or need. Further findings revealed that over 60% of employers said they were confident that their employees could discuss mental health concerns, but only 10% of managers said that they are comfortable discussing their own personal mental health.

Mental health of employees is an area which needs to be taken seriously when you consider that there are 17 million working days being lost in the UK due to work-related stress, depression, or anxiety in 2021/22. It is clear that employees are now speaking more openly about their mental health and prioritising work/life balance however, there has been a low uptake of EAP services often because they are not specifically targeted at the key concerns of employees.
