Only 10% of employees seek managerial support on mental health

Only one in 10 employees (10%) with mental health conditions have sought help from their line manager over the past year and only 5% of staff members would speak to HR, research has found.

A survey of 1,001 employers and 2,005 employees found that only 5% of staff members would speak to HR or a wellbeing officer regarding their mental health, while 14% of employees would speak to a colleague. According to the research, there is a "disconnect" between attitudes among the employers and employees surveyed on whether the "right" mental health support was provided.

Overall, 79% of employers said they are "good" at recognising when team members are under pressure, compared to 44% of employees who agreed their line manager is "very good" at recognising when they are under pressure, which is up marginally from 77% and 37% respectively in 2020.

However, there is a decline in the number of employers (49%) and employees (59%) that believe the stigma towards mental health had decreased, compared to 74% of both employees and employers in 2020.

Additionally, the number of colleagues who said they "did their best" to help a team member with a mental health condition dropped to 71% from 76% in 2020, as scepticism on whether their colleagues have a genuine issue increased marginally to 8% from 5% three years ago.

Although the change in the number of people seeking support is "small", it's hopefully an indication that employees are more aware of the support available to them.

Employers continue to have a vital role to play to ensure that all employees feel confident that they would receive the support they need when required. The employee and employer experience has changed drastically in the three years that this research spans, with Covid-19 as the main driver of change.

It is likely that many of the participants of this research had varying experiences of their own and colleagues' mental health during this period, so it is interesting that we have not seen greater changes in attitudes over this time.
